Now Showing at Your Local Grocer: Strawberries!

Produce Highlight for May: Strawberries, mmmmm!

A Word: Strawberries seasonal peak is in June, but I've been getting such beautiful, sweet strawberries at New Frontiers lately I thought that I'd highlight them this month. Not only are strawberries so nice to look at, smell, and eat, but they are packed with vitamin C and are naturally low in fructose. A note when buying strawberries: strawberries are sprayed with and absorb a whole lot of pesticides. Look for organic or pesticide-free berries when you're in the store. Large supermarkets may mark these up much more, but when they're in season (like now) you'll find the best quality usually on sale or promotion. If you're not finding them, try Trader Joe's or a natural grocer.

Strawberry Rx: Fill up on these gems to bulk up your immune system...nobody likes being sick over summer!

Recipe: Power Smoothie

You'll need:
4-5 good-sized strawberries, diced
1/2 a ripe banana
2 tbs protein powder* (I use an organic hemp powder)
2 tsp powdered rice milk (can substitute 6-8 oz milk of your choice and 1 tsp agave)
6-8 oz water

Directions:
Couldn't be easier...put all of the ingredients in a blender, and blend them.

* A good quality, organic protein powder can be a great source of vitamins and minerals. When looking for a protein powder, read the label and make sure it has a good dose of nutrition along with protein. Some good brands are: Nutiva, MediClear, and Raw Power.
